Historically, Indigenous peoples have successfully managed forests through traditional burning practices. However, decades of poor management, fire suppression, and climate change has led to catastrophic wildfires in California. The Karuk Tribe of Northern California, as part of their just released Climate Adaptation Plan, is advocating to return to prescribed burns as a main part of their fire management, and they hope to serve as a pilot project for how communities in California can become more fire resilient.
