SW CASC principal investigator Dr. Beth Rose Middleton (UC Davis) was recently featured in an NPR piece on cultural burning, a form of under-burning that has been used by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years to increase water runoff into streams, create habitats for plants and animals, recycle nutrients, and promote other ecosystem benefits. The piece focuses on collaborations between the state of California and local tribes to help prevent future wildfires. Visit our Blog and Tribal Projects page to learn more about SW CASC involvement in cultural burning.
