Colorado River Shortage Declaration Expected This Year

The recent drought in the Colorado River Basin, with dry soil conditions and below-average snowpack, are resulting in reduced streamflows in the Colorado River Basin. Lake Mead has 40 percent of normal water  capacity as of April 1st, and the lake elevation is forecasted to fall below 1,075 ft by the end of 2021, resulting in a shortage declaration for several states in the region, including Arizona. Officials in the region are preparing for water conservation measures in the Southwest that relies on the reduced water supply.
